DESIGNER PROFILE

David Haig

Details:

Futuristically styled, the Signature rocking chair is an exquisite work of art, with each part being painstakingly handcrafted using favourite hand tools such as a Japanese whittling knife and a spoke-shave, which allows for rougher and finer shaping to take place.

The process of making the rocker is indeed delicate with each step involving careful marking out, then cutting and shaping by hand. Available in beautiful Walnut and Sycamore wood, and using the steam bending process, David Haig produces up to ten Signature rocking chairs each year.

Based in the picturesque Motueka Valley in Cable Bay, 48 kilometres North West of Nelson, New Zealand, David Haig handcrafts a contemporary rocking chair, that has won acclaim the world over.

David has worked the Signature Rocking Chair to perfection over the years. As a trained woodworker, David Haig’s desire in pursuing his design was to create a rocking chair that was fluid in motion, and when he was finally able to conceptualise this design on paper,
David had sketched a rocking chair that was curvaceous in nature and would require careful construction involving the age-old practice of steam bending.

Futuristically styled, the Signature rocking chair is an exquisite work of art, with each part being painstakingly handcrafted using such favourite hand tools, such as Japanese whittling knives and a spoke-shaves, which allow for rougher and finer shaping to take place.

rocker is indeed delicate with each step involving careful marking out, then cutting and shaping by hand.

Available in beautiful Walnut and Sycamore wood, and using the steam bending process, David Haig produces about 25 Signature rocking chairs each year.
