DESIGNER PROFILE

Katy McIntyre

Details:

Katy’s interest in the natural world stems not only from the beautiful forms and intricate patterns, but also from the efficient and economical use of material that form natural structures. She instils this philosophy into her practice and is able to recycle the off-cuts of clay to use in future works. Katy mostly works with slip casting forms, and then finishes the objects by hand, cutting patterns into the surface of the forms. This technique of hand carving slip cast multiples transforms each object into a unique piece with its own unique pattern.

Katy McIntyre is an Auckland-based Ceramicist who is currently making delicate forms that explore the translucent qualities of Bone China. Originally from Golden Bay in the South Island, a place renowned for its natural beauty, it is no wonder that the natural world is an important Inspiration for her work.

In particular, her works are inspired by the repeating patterns found in nature. She finds herself looking closely, studying
the smallest details, from the patterns and textures of a rock weathered over
and textures of a rock weathered over time, to the more transient, like the patterns left in the sand by an outgoing tide. Katy’s interest in the natural world stems not only from the beautiful forms and intricate patterns, but also from the efficient and economical use of material that form natural structures.

She instills this philosophy into her practice and is able to recycle the off-cuts of clay to use in future works. Katy mostly works with slip casting forms, and then finishes the objects by hand, cutting patterns into the surface of the forms.
This technique of hand carving slip cast multiples transforms each object into a unique piece with its own unique pattern. No two are identical, much like patterns in nature.

Graduating in 2009 with a Bachelor of Design from Unitec, where ceramics became her medium. An internship with renowned New Zealand Ceramicist Peter Collis in 2009 became her stepping stone and she continues to work from Collis’ Studios in Auckland, developing her ceramic practice.
