Backler graduated in 2004 with honours from Victoria University in Wellington, where she studied Industrial Design. She has been producing ceramics since 2009.
Her ceramic designs utilise processes that suit industrial design including using a cnc (computer numerical cutting machine) to make her moulds. Her delicate range of espresso cups and milk jugs are made from porcelain clay and are glazed in a soft blue green glaze that allows the pattern on the surface of the object to show through.
Backler states that the 'traces of the processes and machinery used to create my work play a key role in the development my designs, rather than hide these traces I celebrate them as they create depth and character in the final products. These details are combined with attributes I enjoy working with; subtleties of form, proportion and simplicity.'
She also produces jewellery that follows this design process. They are delicately detailed and the shape of the pieces are reminiscent of kina (sea urchin) shells.
