Julie’s work spans a number of media from metal to fabric, and includes jewellery making and ceramics. A constant theme that runs through all of Julie's work is an interest in the methods and media of textiles.
Julie Collis has recently been creating works in Bone China that are decorated with hand drawn doilies and lace that evoke a sense of nostalgia for an earlier era. These delicate tea sets are called “memories of a grandmother” and reference domestic handcrafts such as crochet and embroidery .
The history of textile craft has been a constant theme throughout Julie's art practice informing her work beyond fabric and fibre, into metal, glass and now clay.
She also continues to work in glass, producing tiny glass jewellery pieces to large platters. Julie is inspired by the quality of glass, its wonderful translucence, the purity of the coloured surface, the exactness of the transfer pattern and yet the softness of the very slightly melted glass.
Julie obtained a Fine Arts degree in Design and a Teachers Diploma in Auckland in the 1970’s, and has taught art and design for some years. Julie shares her Auckland home and studio with her husband, potter, Peter Collis.
