thatch is a design studio based in the beautiful hills of Havelock North in the Hawkes Bay region of New Zealand.

Run by Andrew Johnston, a registered artchitect, thatch is about bringing good design within reach. Functional easy-to-use and kitset in form, the designs are often a work of art in themselves.

Enjoying something of a nomadic lifestyle growing up, Andrew lived in Singapore, Raratonga, New Caledonia and Fiji, before settling back in New Zealand. It was after spending seven years working in the construction industry as an architect that Andrew decided to make the switch to product design.

These experiences and memories often act as an inspiration for his designs and are portrayed in the 'lightness' of all of his work.

'diy' is one of Andrew's first innovations and is a stunning fruit bowl in its simplicity, with the contents of the bowl appearing to float when viewed from a distance. Delivered flat-packed, diy is easy to ship anywhere in the world.
